PopupCheck started in 2004 with one job: give people an honest way to find out if their popup blocker actually works.

Back then, popup ads were everywhere and so were rigged tests. Some of the loudest popup test sites were run by the same companies selling the blockers, and their tests were built so your current software would fail. Then they would recommend theirs. This site was the answer to that. We test blockers, we do not sell them, and we are not affiliated with any vendor.

How the Site Works

The test on our home page opens a series of windows your blocker should stop and a couple it should allow, then scores the result from 1 to 100. Everything runs inside your browser. Nothing downloads, nothing installs, and every test window comes from this site and closes itself. The point values are published on the scoring page, and the harder checks live on the advanced test.

The Engine, Then and Now

The original engine tested the popups of its era: full-screen popups, channel openers, modeless dialogs, Messenger spam. Browsers have since killed most of those tricks, so the test was rebuilt around what popup ads do today. Timed popups, forged clicks, pop-unders, chained popups, and forms that post into new tabs. Old bookmarks still work; retired test pages point to their modern replacements.

Who Runs This

PopupCheck is run by the same person who started it. It has never been owned by a software vendor. If a company wants its blocker tested, the test is the same one you get, and a spot on the top 10 list is earned on score alone.
