Pop Up Blocker Scoring

Pop Up Blocker Scoring information to understand how well your browser blocked popups

How We Score A Pop Up Blocker: The popup blocker quality score is calculated from the kinds of popups your software allows or blocks. Some popups should be allowed; a blocker that kills everything can ruin normal browsing as surely as one that blocks nothing.

Listed below are the tests behind the score and the points each one carries. For a plain description of every test, see the popup test page. The two allowing tests award points when the window opens. The other five award points when it is blocked.

Note: run the test with no popup blocker and no browser protection and you would score 25. The two allowing tests pass on their own, and everything else sails through.

Popup Test Name Added points What earns the points
Popup you asked for 15 It opens
Popup you never asked for 20 Blocked
Timed popup 15 Blocked
Fake-click popup 15 Blocked
Pop-under attempt 15 Blocked
New tab from a normal link 10 It opens
Late popup after your click 10 Blocked

After the score is calculated, your pop up blocking software is given one of seven possible quality ratings listed below.

Rating Score needed
Outstanding 100
Almost Perfect 90 or more
Very Good 80 or more
Above Average 60 or more
Average 40 or more
Poor 20 or more
Bad 0 or more

The floating popup demo and the mouse-over check on the home page carry no points, and neither do the checks on the advanced pop-up test page. They show you tactics a single score cannot capture cleanly across browsers.
